Census Bureau Partners With Schools to Improve Accuracy of 2010 Count

The 2010 Census—a count of everyone living in the United States—is fast approaching, and the United States Census Bureau is partering with schools and other organizations to improve the accuracy of the census, which is mandated by the U.S. Constitution.

Census questionnaires will be mailed or delivered to every household in the United States in March 2010. The information on those questionnaires is one of the primary methods used by the Census Bureau to determine the population of towns, cities, counties, and states. Localities that have low questionnaire return rates can end up with understated population counts. Because population is used to determine representation in state legislatures and the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the distribution of some tax revenues, those localities can end up being under-represented and receive less tax revenue than they should. In the 2000 Census, Smyth County's questionnaire return rate was less than the state average, according to Census officials.

The Census Bureau has asked Smyth County Schools to help spread the word about the importance of getting an accurate count for the 2010 Census. The Census Bureau is providing schools with lesson plans, maps, teaching guides, and other informational materials to help teachers and students learn about the importance of the Census. Details…

NCS Mentor Writing Program Replaced by New Understand Scoring Service

The Virginia Department of Education has replaced the Web-based NCS Mentor for Virginia with a new service to help teachers prepare students for the English Standards of Learning end-of-course writing assessment. The new service is called Understand Scoring. Understand Scoring will be familiar to current Mentor users and offers the following:

Teachers can use the service to score papers in verification sets and view scoring based on Virginia's three-domain scoring rubric. Virginia Provides New Tool to Help Teachers and Parents Select Books to Improve Children's Reading Skills

The Virginia Department of Education is providing teachers and parents with a new tool to help them select books that will strengthen children's reading skills. The tool is called a Lexile measure. A Lexile measure ranks a person's reading ability and a book's text difficulty on a single scale, allowing parents and teachers to select books at or slightly above a students reading level. Currently, more than 115,000 books have been assigned a Lexile measure. For example, the popular children's book Corduroy has a Lexile measure of 600L, which corresponds to the reading level of a child who scores 400 on the Virginia third grade Standards of Learning (SOL) reading test.

Beginning in the Spring of 2009, elementary and middle school students' SOL reading scores will include a Lexile measure. The Virginia Department of Education has also produced a calculator that enables parents and teachers to determine their children's Lexile measures from previous SOL scores.

More information on the Lexile measure program is available on the Department of Education's website and at MetaMetrics, the company with whom Virginia is working to provide the Lexile measures. MetaMetrics provides an online database to look up the Lexile measure of books.
